Background
Photographer Jeremiah Gurney (1812-1886) opened in 1840 at 707 Broadway the first American photo gallery, using the Daguerrotype process with great artistic skill. In 1860 he photographed the Prince of Wales for a carte-de-visite during the Prince's tour of Canada and the United States, and this may well be an imported companion piece. The verso bears a contemporary U.S. Inland Revenue stamp, cancelled, for 2 cents. John Jabez Edwin Paisley MAYALL (1813 -1901) was an English photographer who in 1860 took the first carte-de-visite photographs of Queen Victoria.
