Background
Grand Duke Kirill graduated from the Nikolaev Naval Academy in 1904 and was promoted to Chief of Staff in the Russian Pacific Fleet. He was wounded with burns and shock, and invalided home, when his battleship was blown up at Port Arthur. He only returned to the Navy as Captain in 1908, after restoration of his rank and titles removed over his marriage to Victoria Melita. He continued to serve afloat and in 1915 was made Captain of the Naval Guards, who continued to protect him when he supported the Provisional Government in 1917.From the collection of Grand Duke Kyril & Victoria Melita
