Background
The last scene reflects a popular anecdote of the 1850s that Queen Victoria so responded when asked what the secret was. It has not been verified but has some parallels with other actions of hers. The governor of Mombasa was at her coronation in 1838 and returned in 1842. A better known variant, by Thomas Jones Baker, circa 1863, shows the ambassador kneeling.
