Background
Hérault de Séchelles, a lawyer and fine orator, took part in storming the Bastille. Following the abolition of the Monarchy on 10th August 1793 he was made President of the short-lived Legislative Assembly, and under the Convention of 1793-1795 was several times President. Danton and others had looked beyond the revolution of August 1793 to a period of stability and clemency. But as a member of the Committee of Public Safety, Hérault de Séchelles suffered from the jealousy of those colleagues who feared equally the independence of the Paris commune and their own loss of power, and he, along with Danton, was executed on the 5th April 1794.
