Background
Spinola was Ambassador to Louis XVI while Genoa was still neutral, but when the Revolution gained strength crossed over to London. He returned with the fascinating Catherine Grand, French but suspect because she was married to an Englishman, and who later married Talleyrand. Spinola attempted to recover Genoese property confiscated under the Terror. In 1796 Napoleon clamped down on Genoa for allowing the presence of British ships and imposed a huge indemnity, Spinola was expelled from France as a spy, his colleagues recalled, and Genoa became for a time incorporated in the French Kingdom of Italy,
very light mark of paper clip (Translation) I acknowledge the receipt from Monsieur Morgini of the sum of one hundred pounds sterling for which he will be so good as to debit my account in London 8th October 1794
