Background
Towse joined the 3rd Seaforth Highlanders in 1883 and in 1886 transferred to the Gordon Highlanders; he served with the Chitral relief force & was present at the storming of the Malakand pass. He was promoted to captain in 1896, and took part in the North-West Frontier and Tirah campaigns. In October 1899 he went with the 1st battalion of his regiment to South Africa and was present at the advance on Kimberley and the battle of Magersfontein. On 30th April 1900, when rallying his force of twelve men to attack some 150 Boers, he received the serious injury which cost him his sight. For his gallantry on this occasion and for an earlier attempt at Magersfontein to carry his mortally wounded commanding officer to safety, he was awarded the Victoria Cross.
