Unusual Engraved Portrait from the European Magazine,
showing him half length, nearly full face, in roll-top coat and high-buttoned waistcoat, relaxing at an angle in his heavily upholstered chair, with a thoughtful look as if going over some music, 4¾ x 4, in a window mount with his signature 'Sam. Webbe' in a second window below, 10¾ x 9 overall, published by J. Asperne, London, 1st February

Background
Webbe was organist at the Bavarian Embassy Chapel and later at the Sardinian, centres of Roman Catholic music in London. He also wrote for the Anglican service, best remembered for his adaptation of 'Richmond' to 'When I survey', and edited 'Convito Armonico', a wonderful collection of Madrigals, Glees, Canons and the like, many of which are still sung today.
