Background
Written apparently on a visit to England, their base from 1872 being Trieste. Lady Burton's 'efforts' may well be the local society in Trieste for the prevention of cruelty to animals. For her signature and handwriting see, for example, BL Add MS 88861 (Burton's life dictated to her on board ship to Bombay, 1876).
