Background
George Lamb, favourite younger brother of the 2nd Viscount Melbourne, later Prime Minister, was, in Parliament, the most radical in the family. His father was generally believed to be his godfather, George IV. He displayed boisterous animal spirits, drank too much, but was of a genial good nature. !n 1809 he married Caroline St Jules, the illegitimate daughter of Lady Elizabeth Foster and the 5th Duke of Devonshire. In 1816 she had a much publicized affair with Lord Brougham in Italy, but the couple wee reconciled the next year. When Wellington's government fell in 1830, in the midst of the agitation that led to the Reform Act, Melbourne received the Home Office (and so was responsible for public order) and made George his under-secretary in the Commons.. George received high praise for his defence of Lord Brougham when the latter was attacked in absence by J.W. Croker.
