Background
The Arthur Stanhopes were close friends of Princess Sophia and her sister Princess Augusta. Arthur (October 1752 - August 1836, son of Ferdinando Stanhope) was a first cousin of Philip Stanhope, (1755-1815, from 1773 5th Earl of Chesterfield). His wife Eliza (d. 22nd February 1837, aged 77) was the daughter of the Revd. Robert Thistlethwayte, and a near relation of the 5th Earl's first wife. Tilney Street, where also Mrs FitzHerbert lived, runs between Park Lane to opposite the present Chesterfield House in South Audley Street, which succeeds the 5th Earl's mansion.
