Background
The Leicester Secular Society's well-known Rationalist and undogmatic stance, combined with a respect for other traditions, attracted lecturers on Sunday evening from an immense variety of schools of thought, and in turn gave its members a view on all the major topics of the day. Arthur Ponsonby was born at Windsor Castle, the son of Queen Victoria's private secretary Sir Henry. In 1898 he married Sir Hubert Parry's daughter Dorothea, and they settled down in the medieval Shulbrede Priory in West Sussex, for which Parry composed the charming piano pieces Shulbrede Tunes.
