Background
Beautifully engraved by the French Jean-Alexandre Alais [or Allais, 1792-1850] after a drawing by John Partridge (1789-1872). The magazine displayed the latest fashions from London and Paris. The 'Royalty' plates emphasised the personality of the sitter and their restrained good taste. 1818 was the year of the 'race' to secure an heir to the throne. It was 'won' by Edward, Duke of Kent (1767-1820), who married Princess Victoria of Saxe-Coburg on 11th July 1818.
