Background
Princess Alice, (1843-1878), whom Louis married at Osborne in 1862, had died on 14th December. For five weeks she had nursed her children and husband through diphtheria, but had succumbed herself. Their daughter Alix, 1872-1918, was the last Empress of Russia.
