Background
Karl Friedrich, pupil of Goethe, continued his father's work whereby Saxe-Weimar had become the cultural centre of Germany. His ideas, though liberal, did not advance fast enough for some, and the disturbances of 1848 brought in a popular ministry and many further reforms. Saxe-Weimar is the oldest branch of the Ernestine line and hence of the whole Saxon house.
